Classes
Literature and Writing Classes– as well as Individual Tutoring
Hello!
Some of you have asked whether I am teaching a literature/writing class next school year (for approximately grades 5-8). The answer is, “Yes!" if I have at least 6-10 students! Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested.
For this class I’m looking at using IEW as the base. Having taught IEW to my sons Tate and Anthony for several years, as well as to several groups of students, I’m very familiar with it; and, although it’s not perfect, I truly believe it does produce very competent, solid writers. As of now, I’m leaning toward teaching the IEW Narnia unit this next year, but I am open to other options (Medieval historical, etc.). That being said, I would probably not only stick within the IEW unit, but branch off a bit here and there, depending on the students’ interests and the different levels within the class.
My husband James and I travel quite a bit as we have a Christmas tree farm in Tennessee that we need to tend to several months of the year, so class would preferably be on Wednesdays from 9:30-11:00am. Starting in mid-September and ending in mid-May, I would try to come up with a schedule in which we meet approximately three out of every four Wednesdays. That would be roughly 10 classes in the fall and 12-14 classes in the spring. The location would be at my home in Irvine, near Culver and I-5.
As I did in previous years, I will continue to aspire to the following goals for the class and the students (CONTINGENT on EACH student’s own level):
For classes, the cost would be $20 per student per class, not including the IEW materials (approx. $30-50 depending on which theme is decided upon). If financially necessary, I am open to becoming a vendor with a charter school, depending on the fees and paperwork required, etc. (we can figure that out).
For individual tutoring, the cost is $50 per hour for K-6th grade; $60 for junior high and above.
Please email me with any questions at [email protected].
I look forward to working with and getting to know you and your student!
With eager anticipation,
Toija Fitzgerald (a.k.a Mrs. Fitzgerald)

PS: My name is pronounced “Toy-ya”, like LaToya Jackson but w/out the “La”. It’s a Scandinavian thing. 🙃
